TomDickinson Aug 13, 2006 04:02 PM

What % of bleach solution should I use to clean cages that I aquired.I don't want to risk any disease or parasite transmission. Also how well does it work?Does it kill everything?
Thanks Tom

No it doesn't kill everything but bleach works optimally at a 10% concentration. Make sure to rinse well and let dry and air out for a good 24hrs for best results.

Anybody have any feedback on Virosan?

joeysgreen Aug 15, 2006 06:49 PM

what's the active ingredient?

lizardman Aug 15, 2006 09:56 PM

From what I found on the MSDS of Virosan:

Chlorhexidine Gluconate 20%
Isopropyl Alcohol 2%

Thanks

Then virosan is a good product as well. Compared with bleach, hard to say, but I'd trust it equally. Quatanary ammonium products are probably the best for virus' and some of the more rare pathogens. Nothing is perfect however. Of these three, virosan is probably the least harsh on your reptiles should they come into contact with it.

Common vinegar sold in supermarkets far superior to bleach.
Safe, non-toxic, to you and the animal.
Fill up spray bottle almost to the top with vinegar, add some "natural" dish washing liquid, and some lemon juice concentrate to counteract strong vinegar smell. Been using this for years as a general cleaning and disenfectant.
Vinegar has a higher bacterial and germ kill ratio than bleach.
