T-Rex of Spinney-tailed Iguanas

Manny Aug 13, 2006 05:31 PM

Here is one of the ones I caught today. He's a mean one but, one of the most colorful and largest I've caught. He measures 17" STV and 38" OAL. He would probably measure 42" OAL since he has a portion of the end of the tail regenerated. I also caught some others (smaller) ones. The weather here was sunny & clear with the temps exceeding 95 degrees. The iguanas were running on jet fuel as you could imagine and everywhere you looked there was one.

Interesting picture. When they get that big, what are they feeding on ? Is there any particular plant that is their main staple food in Florida ?

manny Aug 14, 2006 04:12 PM

They are omnivorous, opportunistic feeders and will consume nearly anything the find appetizing such as flowers, grasses, berries, dates from palms, and anything alive that moves the right way.

They are mainly vegetarian and I truly believe that the main part of their diet consists of assorted grasses and Shepard’s needle which is a plant that grows wild through out Florida.

Shepard's Needle ? Does it go by any other names ? Do you have any pictures of it ?

The latin name is: Bidens Alba. In Cuba, this plant is boiled and the tea is consumed to help in the passing of kidney stones and to help with the healing of urinary tract infections. Here is a link to some pictures.
