Fertile clutch?

cammyleon Aug 13, 2006 07:40 PM

My veiled chameleon laid 66 eggs last November. 62 of them hatched about a month ago, but now she laid another clutch. She has not been with a male since last October. These eggs seem smaller than her first clutch. They are 1/2" in length. Is it possible that they are fertile? They look white, but is there another way to tell if they are fertile? How soon will they go bad if they aren't? Thanks!

Usually ones that are smaller are infertile, but I would still incubate them until they go bad. It should only take a couple of weeks.

Your female's clutch was rather large. Its said that if the clutches are that large its harder on the female than a smaller clutch and she will wear out faster. You might want to look at limiting her diet. Feed her well for a few days after she has laid the clutch and then cut back so that she isn't overfed but isn't starved until you know she is working on the next batch of eggs. I always lower the temperature a degree or so centigrade to slow her metabolism down a bit too.
