chameleon training 101

misspardalis Aug 13, 2006 08:45 PM

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone had any experiences dealing with a feisy chameleon and tips on getting it a little more accustomed to people. I have a 4.5 month old male panther- very pretty- who behaves most of the time (he lets me spray water at his mouth and stands still and lifts his head to drink, and also will not hesitate one second to eat crickets off of my hand repeatedly) but I have a real hard time getting to come out of the cage. I never grab or pull him off the branch, just try to gently and very slowly put a hand underneath and try to coax him to walk onto my hand. Once he sees the hand get close to him he gapes his mouth and does the swinging biting motiong while hissing. I back off an he will start to run aound the branches, and while he is blindly trying to escape he will walk onto my hand with out noticing, and that's how I finally get him out. Once he gets out he calms down and acts totally cool. Any coaxing tips or ideas to keep him calm? I do not want to scare him or have him fall while trying to escape. Should I just not take him out at all or will he learn I'm not trying to hurt him and stop trying to bite?

You could get a cricket and hold by you hand and when he starts to walk towards pull it further away but leave your hand for him hold on, to get at the cricket with. Then let him have it when he gets on your hand all the way.
