Cage size and Substrate

shawn20 Aug 13, 2006 09:47 PM

Well im in search for whats best for a beardie. First i need to know what size tank to buy, i heard 40 breeder was pushing it, but im only getting 1. Also i've seen a lot of put on sand and i know that with leopard gecko's, that isn't a good match because they might eat it. I've looked at care sheets and they are all the same. SO i guess my question for you guys is, what size tank do you recommend, and what kind of substrate. also what watt bulb to use with the tank. Thanks a lot

Shawn

4x2x2 foot cage for an adult dragon. 18-24 inches in height is fine. i recommend reptisun 10.0 bulbs for UVB. a simple house bulb of flood light for heat bulbs. 115 degree basking temp for babies, 110 max for adults. cool side of cage 75-80 degrees, night time drop of 65-70 is fine.

substrate:
best to use is newspaper, or non adhesive shelf liner. i use white shelf liner, duck brand, available at walmart. sand is ok, but not the best. if you do use sand, washed and sifted playsand is best to use, not that crap from pet stores like calci sand or reptisand.
