New eastern hatchling

Weekendherper Aug 14, 2006 06:22 PM

I just got this girl the other day. She was born 7/27. I really had no idea they were this small as hatchlings (5 grams). So far she has refused a non scented f/t pinkie and a tuna scented rat tail. I'm hoping to find a toad out tonight for scenting. Anyway, I just wanted to share a picture of her.

I have found small green tree frogs great for the little ones. You just have to hold it still for them. Mine would go CRAZY with feeding responses to them. Plus, tree frogs seem to be much easier to find than small toads. Once you get a feed response going they will go after anything moving, so you might be able to trick it into taking a pinky.

I've never fed my easterns any frogs or toads, but I've had to scent dead pinkies with gray tree frog to get them started. I've heard reliable accounts that green tree frogs and spadefoot toads also work well for scenting. ...and then there's the water that canned tuna comes packed in. Good luck! They're worth extra effort.

I managed to find a few toads last night for scenting and she ate a scented pinkie right out of my hand tonight.

Please keep us (or at least me) posted on your progress to get this little one to eat. I am having the same problem. I found one about a month ago (9" long), and it eats live toads easily enough. I tricked it into eating one pinkie once, just once, and haven't been able to since, nor F/T frogs. Plus, it's HARD to find little toads/frogs that small.

If I can't get him to eat soon, (it's been 15 days now), I may turn him loose.
