Boa abondening prey...

lurch694u Aug 14, 2006 10:12 PM

I have a central american boa thats I feed a small rat every week. I keep him in a 4ft boapile cage temps and conditons are correct. My question is that every once in while he will bite and constrict his prey then abonden it. I leave the rat in there for about a hour and he just goes back into his hide and doesn't eat it. Anybody know what this could be? He has done this the last two times I tried to feed him.

Are you presenting live prey or frozen thawed? I have had that problem with frozen thawed. What I have done was to present the prey a second time and after the snake has struck and started constricting, I grab on to the prey's back foot with a pair of tongs and shake it a little to simulate it still being alive.

If that is not your situation maybe you are presenting to large of a prey item and your snake is intimidated by the size when he starts searching for the head to begin feeding. In that case, maybe you could try presenting smaller prey and see how that goes.

One of our girls will abandon her prey if we walk in while shes eating it... Just a very shy feeder. Sounds like your girl does it while shes all alone, so I'm not sure what could be going on there... hopefully someone can help.
