Tragic weekend.....extremely heartbroken!

snakecharmed Aug 04, 2003 02:40 AM

I hope everyones weekend was better than mine! My cat somehow got into the room where I keep my incubators and she knocked one of them over which contained 22 Sandfire Beardie eggs that were due to hatch in just 2 weeks! I walked into the room and the hovabator was laying upside down, and the deli cups containing the eggs were also turned upside down. It felt like someone had just ripped out my heart, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, it's one of those nightmares that you want to wake up from. I put the incubator back together and gathered up the eggs and placed them back in the vermiculate and because I didn't mark the tops of the eggs, I have no idea which side was sappose to be up (I wasn't expecting to ever have to "move" them so marking them never crossed my mind). I'm extremely heartbroken, I was really looking forward to these little guys hatching. Does anybody know what the chances are that these eggs could still hatch? I'm trying to not get my hopes up, I'm expecting the worse and hoping for the best. Has anybody had anything like this happen and the eggs survive? This isn't the only bad thing that happened to me yesterday, the last egg from my sandfireXyellow hatched and the baby was so deformed that it was heartbreaking! It's back legs were joined together, it looked more like a mermaid tail than back legs. At the end of its joined back legs was one foot, and the poor little guys leg folded upwards instead of the normal position. His head was deformed also. He had only one eye and the other side of his head was caved in. And last but not least, his internal organs were on the outside of his body. It broke my heart when he opened his one little eye and looked up at me. I had to have him put down. Does anybody know what causes these types of deformities? The rest of his clutchmates are super healthy babies and the mother has always had healthy babies so I know it's not from her genetics, however, this is the first clutch that the dad has fathered so is it possible that it's in his genes? Any input on either matter (the flipped eggs and the deformed baby) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading my long post! Christy

The eggs still might make it though. As long as they arent borken. Ask joel he might be able to tell you how to candle them and see what side is up. I never move my eggs either so I wouldnt know. As far as the baby goes. well its not too uncommon. Out of all the babies hatching not all of them are ment to survive. Its part of the natural mortality rate. It could have been a slug or an egg that got attacked by fungas or bacteria and caused deformities. I really dont think its genetic. Dont feel so bad about it.

And as far as my day goes I got chased by 500-1000 wasps and got stung like crazy.

peace,
nate

hole the eggs with two fingers, preferably in a darker room so the lighting is dim, and take a flashlight that is small or has a pinpoint to it, and place the flashlght gently up to one side of the egg.. does not matter which side. You will see the veins, the embryo, and lost particles flowing through there.. you will even see the dragon if it's tha late in development.

Your biggest problem is going to be how long the eggs were out on the floor, and if they got "cracked" and knocked around to much. I've never had that happen, so I don't know.. but you can candle them to see what's going on. At that late of development, you should be able to see the dragon.

The eggs were on the ground for no longer than 30 minutes, I had just checked on them before I went to feed the rodents and it took about 30 minutes to take care of them, when I came back in I saw the mess that my cat had made. None of them busted luckily, but I don't know if I have them right side up, do you know how I might be able to tell? I candled them and everything looks ok inside but the babies aren't moving so I don't know if they are dead or not. Usually when eggs are this far along, you can see the babies move slightly so I don't know. I guess I won't know anything for 2 weeks. Christy

Towing tends to be alot....not just the initial towing fee but the impounding fee is high too. Not sure about it in your area, but here in Ontario, the tow fee could be anywhere from $50 to $150 depending on how far it had to be towed. The impound fee is something like $150 plus $100 a day...including weekends and holidays....so you may be looking at $750 total....hopefully it's not that bad for you.

My weekend was alright though my mice are starting to drive me nuts...I have too many of them and need to find homes but nobody seems to want mice as pets. I may just have to sell them or give them to the petstore..where they will most likely wind up food for somebodies reptile.

Well, I live in southern Ontario too, and once got my car towed and impounded. It was a total bucket of a car, and when I found out what it would cost to get it back I seriously considered just buying another POS to replace it :X If my cd's and some other personal stuff hadn't been in it, I would have!

i love mice, used to have rats as pets also, they were just wonderful, if ya like that sort of animal they make just as great a pet as dragons do, they are so friendly. Too bad you cant keep them all or find them homes, its a shame to have to give them up to the petstore, how about your local SPCA? they will take in things like mice also, many times people will adopt them also, just a thought, good luck...

So last august I got married (no this isn't the stupid part . Well I went on my honey moon a week later. I still had 1 clutch of eggs that were incubating. I brought all my dragons to a freinds place. When I got back I went to pick up all my dragons and other critters. Well when I got home all the eggs in the shoebox that I keep eggs in had rolled all around. They were about 2 weeks from hatching. I was like oh my go this sucks. I am so stupid. All these dragons are going to die. What an idiot I am. Well two weeks went by and every dragon hatched out fine. Moving can dislodge blood vessels but doesn't always. Keep your fingers crossed you may get lucky.

Keep em warm, keep em quiet, and wait. Eggs are designed to be durable, conditions in the wild are much, much tougher. If they aren't cracked I'd say there's a good chance they'll be fine. I have no idea on the "right side up" thing though, I've never raised baby beardies myself. Good luck! I'll be waiting in two weeks to see how things turned out.
