how long will fake rock last

quincy Aug 15, 2006 04:15 PM

If I make it out of plaster of paris?
Tile grout and styrofoam?

Im thinking that the hardware cloth/cement would last longest perhaps? But it sounds difficult to work with, I hate hardware cloth its hard to bend and cuts me with those sharp edges.

I am going to make a new cage for my ball python and my cornsnake out of a fairly big set of solid wood shelving.I want it to last the lifetime of the snakes with fake rock background and such..So I dont want something that in a few years will crumble or breakdown.Especially seeing as ball pythons can live a really long time(probably will outlive me).

Also which sealant would work best for long term use..
Thanks

1.0 ball python
0.1 BCI
0.1 Northern BlueTongue
0.1 normal cornsnake

go get a rock from somewhere on a beach or so...wash it then bake it then let it cool down and put it under the heat lamp...viola heat rock

I built two cages using the foam and tile grout method and the one is a year old, the other is two years old. The first only has one real crack that formed (I could easily fix it but have yet to get around to it) and the other is perfect. The two year old one is the first cage I made using faux rock so that is the longest timeline I have.

nice work on the rock structure, well done. I did a similar version for my african cichlid tank, i'll try and dig up a photo. a little work but more than worth it....

Cheers

How did you seal it so that it was water safe for your cichlid???

I have an aquatic turtle and would love a faux background/basking area, but I have to make sure that it's safe to put in the water.
