Something strange...

Lucien Aug 04, 2003 05:10 AM

A few days ago I noted an almost perfectly circular raised bump for lack of a better word, on the underside of my female leo's jaw. Now this bump seems just to be a skin thing..it moves freely when palpated gently, so its probably transdermal. It doesn't seem tender.. she's still eating and using the bathroom fine...None of her cage conditions have changed and her mate, my male blizzard Caine, has no signs of anything similar. Its on the underside of her jaw to the right back near the throat. This bump is probably raised about a centimeter...maybe less.. she wouldn't sit still to let me measure it.. Before I start worrying and take her to a vet, I want to know if anyone else may know what this is. Like I said, none of her behaviors have changed...her eating habits..nothing... I'm waiting for my digital Camera to get here...probably tomorrow or wednesday. After that I'll probably be able to post a picture of it for positive verification.. But I'd like some idea of what it could be before then.

I have a sand boa with almost the same thing. Her lump is about the same size, it sounds like, but she's a tiny snake. The vet said it's most likely a subcutaneous encysted parasite... like a worm that got lost and went under the skin. There are a couple other things it could be too. It's not life-threatening to my understanding, but I'd have it checked out by a professional. I could be completely off base here, but it sounds very similar.
