homing your gecko???

webber2006 Aug 16, 2006 07:04 AM

my gecko must be about 3/4 months old now, he is only a few inches in length as you could imagine. how big should its home be because i have a 40" x 12" x 12" vivarium should i put it in something small. could a large vivarium cause stress because they have so much space and being so little themselves?
any help will be appriciated

Well, at that age I would guess he should be 5-6" well fed... that being said, that is a sized tank for breeding. Most people agree an adult would be happy with a 10 gal for their whole life. We raised our leo in a 10 gal until she hit over 9" long, we thought she would like more room and moved her to a 20 long since we expect she may get even bigger and we can add more later.

At that size home I wonder how stressed it is, especially if it was raised in a small breeder's box. The transition would be extreme. I would also be greatly concerned at his ability to hunt properly giving the small size of the crickets and the very large size of the space he has to hunt in. Moving him into a 10 gal until he gets bigger is the best bet. Who suggested such a large enclosure to you in the first place?

Is your leo currently in this 40 x 12 x 12 tank? If so, does it appear to be stressed out? My first thought is that yes, it would be awfully big for such a young leo, but, all leos are different, it may be fine. You could also just put a partition in the tank and make the area smaller for now

I agree I would worry about it's ability to hunt crickets, but you could just cut off the crickets back legs so they can't escape as easily/quickly. And if you feed mealies or any other worm type feeders, those can be kept in a bowl.

I keep all my adults in 15 or 20 gal long tanks, I've only used a 10 gal for hatchlings. I just feel 10 gal is too small for an adult.
