Froggiefriend Aug 16, 2006 04:59 PM

I got two white lipped tree frogs as a present from a friend on Monday. I noticed one was quite a bit more active, bright eyed, and hungry than the other. This morning I found what looks like a cut above the lip of the less active froggie, and started to call vets in my area who treat exotic animals. The thing is, this gift was a total surprise, and I'm a single girl living on her own who just does not have the $45 for the visit, let along whatever the medication costs may be! Does anyone know of a way I could try to treat this myself? I mean, obviously, I'm no veterinarian, but just like we humans have at-home or herbal remedies, I'm wodering if there's something of the sort for our froggie friends(?) The last time I took my Whites to the vet I paid $100 for the visit and some medicated water I had to bathe him in.
I've only had him two days but I love him already and I want to help him! Thanks for reading this....sorry it was so long!

Well, I don't know how much of a help I can be, but I do know that white lipped tree frogs need more humidity than a white's and are less able to cope with temp changes. You may want to isolate this guy till he's feeling better, just as a precaution. Place him in a smaller container by himself with a water dish and something to hide in. Use a wet paper towel as substrate. Remember not to leave the crickets in there, take them out after a couple hours if he has not eaten them.

Thanks for your response! Unfortunately, my little guy moved on to a better place last night I had him isolated in a 10 gallon tank with a screen top for some fresh air, water dish, stuff to climb on, etc. I put two calcium dusted crickets in the tank and prayed he would eat them, but he never did I left to go grocery shopping and....here's the weird part...when I returned, he was hanging on the screen top by his front toes! It looked so creepy! I thought he got stuck but when I lifted the top, his little lifeless body fell to the ground I only had him for 2 days and I STILL cried! Oh I'm such a dork...

So I'm going to contact my friend who bought them for me today, and speak with the manager of the store where she got them. Obviously this poor fella had something wrong with him before I got him. The other guy is as active and friendly as ever, so I just thank my lucky stars I got the sick one out of the tank before he infected the other. (geez, I really have to come up with a name already! LOL)

Thanks again

sorry to hear about your froggie. if you find a small cut or scrape that is not too deep you can clean it with some betadine or povidone iodine and put some antibacterial ointment or cream on it. that happened to Jack once.

Sorry to hear that you lost him. It is always sad when an animal dies, don't be calling yourself names because of it. It's harder when they die in our care.

the more active frog might be bullying the smaller frog, if this is the case you have to seperate them. the cut (if small) might heal by itself. if ypu have a screen top it might be trying to get out and that is what is causing the cuts. my frog did that.
