Tennesee Turtle Law?

Barbedwirecat Aug 17, 2006 11:18 AM

I haven beed trying to research this. I understand native species are illigal to keep unless rehab permit or educators license.

I want to get a Tort, I live in TN. I have had conflicting info about having a tort shipped here (IE I can't) An OWNing them in this state. I was told it was illigal to SELL them, but not POSSESS them. So......what do I do?

I have no problem trying to get a permit to own a tort. But....do I have to? I guess I just wanna find a good trustworthy place that will either ship a tort or I can pick up around here. I'd love to adopt one as opposed to purchase, but there are not adoption societies here and most require home visits.

Any help at all would be great.

I have owned Box Turtles before, I defenitly DON'T want a Sulcata (I don't think it would be fair) But I can handle something in between, I'm researching greeks or Hermans. I already buy a bunch of greens and vegis for my other animals (Brids, uromastyx, bearded dragon) so I should be set. LOL one trip to the store for me, one trip to the store for the Zoo....

Now I'm thinking Leopard tort, or Marginated....any good breeders? I think I've read enough things to find out its OK to ship here, and posess, just not sell.

Hi, remember that LEos. might be hard to keep outdoors in TN. You might want to look into greeks, and hermanns as well, leos. get big and need to be kept outdoors but the high humidity might make it hard, just my 2 cents. Also they dont hibernate.

Barbedwirecat Aug 17, 2006 03:07 PM

Yea I know all about the leopards, I would be OK with this. I love sulcatas, but know this would not be appropriate, leopards being slightly smaller than these guys is about what I want. I can deal with 100 lbs and 26". I CAN'T deal with 200lbs, 36 "

I am looking ALOT more into Marginated torts as these guys are from greece, and EXACTLY the size I want and hibernate.
I want something over a ft, but not large enough that I can't move it by myself. So. I think I'm considering purchasing one from LLLReptile, this seems to be the only place that I can find babies, and I have ordered live animals from them before and have been very happy.

Any insights?

OK I think I finally figured out what I want. A Red Foot. LOL sorry I always do this before the purschase or adption of a new animal, I spend a bunch of time researching and comparing.

I almost purchased a Sulcata at the last herp show I went to, I bought dart frogs instead. After spending about 300 to keep them happy along with fruit flies they turned out to have a Cytrid fungus (normally found in wild frogs) that is almost always terminal. I got these frogs from a very reputable breeder and had done plenty of research, this fungus was VERY unexpected. I was in contact with the Baltimore Aquarium for treatment. After a necropsy on one, and 40.00 worth of mediaction on the other I almost wish I has gotten the tort. All in all I spent about 500.00 (and that was with my vet discount-I worked as a vet tech there) on two little frogs that died. Now I have 1 planted 10 gallon and one planted 45 gallon that I can never keep another amphibian in without burning the plants.

I may have gotten a tort that would get big but....well.... It would have had a KICKIN enclosure. I was thinking of cutting a hole in my wall and building a ramp so the tort could go in and out, disasembling one of those cat doors that only opens when the cat has the sensor or the collar and attaching the sensor to the torts back.

Oh well....Looks like redfoot it shall be. Thanks guys Any extra info would be greatly appriciated.

Hi, do a lot of research before getting one, they requrie high humidity, and need it warm, and humid, they cant stand cold temps. like under 70 or 65, hatchiling i would keep warmer, also they do not hiberante, so you will need to find a way to make a big enough indoor enclsoure that will hold humidity, thinking ahead, they get roughly 14 inches, some smaller some bigger, there for you need like 10x10 foot enclsoure, and indoors for the winter, of at least 8x5, but i would acctually dedicate a room for a full grown red footed if i were you, Im sure its a good choice, but do research and do your homework, it will all pay out at the end.... Lol, sorta like real school, lol. Damn i should done my homework, lol JK, but good luck let keep us all updated.

LOL yes its alot like school. I've been up since 10 this mornin researching more than I ever have, been sitting here almost all day trying to decide whats right for me and right for the turtle. I have everything all planned out. The baby will have a indoor pond i had been using for feeder fish, I'll pile it with dirt/sand mixture and cover half with plexiglass for humidity. I keep alot of Tarantulas and high humidity species so I understand all this The climate here is failrly humid and hot in the summer, considering a greenhouse just in case. I will have a room set and ready if need be. I'll need to work on it a bit to make sure i seal off the flooring and get enough dirt/sand to cover the floor. Hehe, humans live here? Heck no, they just keep me around for the feedings....

When you mean pond, i hope you mean with out the water, lol. Well, good luck, it will be easier when its a baby but when it gets older it will need more room indoors during the winters, but either way good luck, make sure you have it hot and humid, but not to hot, they like it like 80s-90s, again keep us updated.

Barbedwirecat Aug 18, 2006 11:49 AM

LOL yea its a pondform. I have seen quite a few people use these, they just fill them with soil as oposed to water and make a turtle table that way I can get them up to 200 gallons and 7-8 ft long, plus they have areas to burrow down witch is great. Like a kiddy pool but deeper and more asthetically pleaseing (and more expensive) I already have one I'm not useing so it'll work out great. Plus I already have the sand/soil mix because I use it for my taranutals. LOL I have about 50 lbs of it.
