moving... what to expect?

kailaya Aug 04, 2003 08:27 AM

I'm moving soon and have no idea what to expect from kameko (my mali). I bought a vision cage for him and I am going to set that up at the new place with all of the hides, logs, and substrate that he has from the old place. I know the move is going to totally freak him out, not to mention the fact that he has a new cage as well. He's only about a year old, and when i first got him it took him about 3 weeks to eat. He is the SLOWEST acclimator ever. He is still warming up to me (kinda skittish, reserved, and downright stubborn at times) and I have had him for a little over three months. I know we'll be starting from square one again. I'm finally starting to be able to tame him and i feel bad because I know the trust level is going to go out the window.

Does anyone have any stories about how they moved their uro, what to expect, what they did to aid in their acclimation, etc?

thanks!!!!

Do you have to switch cages at the same time as you move? When I moved my ornates they were upset for a while because they could see out (all glass aquarium) and knew their surroundings were different. The Saharans didn't seem as disturbed because they are in a tub and they can't see outside very much but it took them a few days to eat, I guess even the daylight and sky view is different after moving for them.

I would take a picture as to how the current cage is set up. Then when you move, before you put your mali in the new cage, set up the cage to what the old one looked like. Place all the furniture where is was in the old cage. Accimilating will not be as hard on the little one. It's really the only thing i can think about to help with the move.

all his housing stuff will be exactly the same, (i.e. i'm taking his hide, logs, and trees, etc from the old tank and putting it in the new). the only difference is that he is going from an all glass tank to a vision cage. I know he's not too keen on his current cage as it is. Luckily the drive to the new place is only 10 minutes.

do you think it is better to move him right when he wakes up or later in the day?

thanks again,

I have found with vision cages they seem to feel much more secure. In my experience the all glass tends to confuse and stress them a little, even with a background they can still see themselfs everyonce in a while. Hopefully he will adjust better, with a 3-closed sided tank. I would move him in right away.
Good luck and enjoy your move!
