Getting into Gray-bands, where to start

Oregonherpaholic Aug 17, 2006 05:27 PM

I want to get my first gray-banded kingsnake but do not know where to start. I do not know locality names or anything. I just know they are gorgeous snakes I want to keep and breed them. At moment I am going after the Bright orange banded morph. (Correct term Please)..

What GOOD books are available? What GOOD websites? (other than this one). AND Recommended breeders?? If I get one, I might as well get a pair...right

Thanks in advance,

Harpy

If you want to get your feet wet and like the big orange saddles of a Blairs phase I would shop for a 277, Juno or Langtry animal. All three of those localities are frequently produced by a large number of reputable breeders. That is not say that you will not find some outstanding Blairs phase animals from other localities too.

Be sure to verify the feeding status of any animal though. As you may have figured out looking through the post you can get some real problem feeders from time to time. I would think that a problem feeder would not be the best way to introduce yourself to the animal.

You should also be able to talk the breeder out some pictures of the actual animals you are considering. Ask them to picture it with a size reference like a coin if possible.

I would also go through the Alterna page to see some the localities. There are maps, habitat shots, and pictures of the animals to enjoy there.

Also, and this may be down the road... But much of the fun is getting out and looking for them. There is a whole social experience to this. This also goes back to the point of preferring locality animals.
