I went hiking today for about 3 hours 8 - 11:00am and found 4 of these guys. None rattled until I got REALLY close and none were under cover. They are pretty easy to find here (if they're out) because they make a distinct noise when they are moving through the dry grass. One was actually at the end of a track I saw...that has never happened to me before.

Here are a few pics...enjoy.

Nice,Jake. Big helleri in late Summer and Fall. More than once I've tracked crossing dirt roads only to have a partner point out the quarry is lying on the other side of the road traveling in the other direction. Now that is embarassing!

Whereabouts were you hiking? I saw a few up in the Santa Susana foothills last weekend.

I was actually in Palos Verdes - I usually see a few any time I'm out in the morning this time of year.
