Rescue Blood R.I.

BigRed Aug 17, 2006 10:13 PM

Just got my hands on a rescue red blood this afternoon, which all in all isnt in bad shape but, has a fairly significant R.I.
She's about 3 1/2ft, and looks to be a good weight, with some fairly solid body mass. The cage she was dropped of to me in, is a 35g, with aspen...that didnt look like it had been changed in quite some time. I thought she looked great at first glance, brought her in, cleaned up her cage, and got ready to put her back in. At that point, I still hadnt noticed anything wrong with her. When I went to pick her up to put her back, and she started to hiss, is when it became obvious...as she was showing her displeasure with me touching her, I noticed the bubbles from her right nostril, and as she got more urgent, and louder with the hissing, the drool started. By the time I got her put back, it was literally pouring from her mouth. Anyway, just looking for a few opinions on the quickest, and most effective way to start getting this under control. Normally with a seemingly deep R.I. like this, I'd see a vet, to start to get it under control but, unfortunately in the region I'm in now, the option isnt available to me so, any and all tips and/or opinions will be a huge help.
Thanks in advance.

Hey,
Unfortunately with a severe RI, the only remedy is to seek the assistance of a vet, and get the proper meds immediately. You could try using some Tetracycline, but can't guarantee that it will work. It is an old remedy used when veterinary medicine, in particular herp med, was in its infancy, but it might be worth a try. Obviously increasing the heat is a major factor in possibly combatting this infection. Better meds are Amikacin and Baytril.

One of mine did something like that once, so I brought her in and we did a culture and sensitivy and nothing abnormal grew. Yeah, we normally don't see snakes at the vet I work at, so you could imagine the poor doctor trying to stick the swab in this 5'5" 20lb hissing snake while I held her mouth open. She seemed fine by the next day anyway, so I'm wondering if I handled her too soon after drinking and some water came up or something? It was a large amount of liquid. Maybe that's what happened to yours? (hopefully!)
