Snake adjusting its feeding schedule?

-ryan- Aug 17, 2006 10:34 PM

My snake suddenly seems to be adjusting his feeding schedule. Instead of eating once a week, he seems to not get hungry until somewhere between one and two weeks. He's about 30" long right now, about 6 monthes old. Is this normal, or do you think there might be something else going on? Should I just try to work around his schedule? I was thinking it might help if I tried feeding him two large mice every two weeks instead of one every week.

The thing that I think is weird is that he's suddenly been so much more active as well. He's constantly up exploring his enclosure at night. Is he going through some kind of weird phase? I was also thinking he might be smelling my work clothes (I work at a pet store), but he does this whether or not my work clothes are out.

By the way, he is captive bred, and has lived on frozen/thawed mice the past 6 monthes that he has been in my care.

I would try to get him on rats so he will get larger meals. Some snakes will not eat every week. It's just the way it is, but 1 mouse every 2 weeks is not enough IMO. He will survive on that, but you won't get much growth

I think that he likes to eat every 9 days now, because that's the day I've been having the most success with. Today he took 2 large mice. Once I'm all through with the mice, I'll be moving onto rats, but I still have quite a few large mice yet before that time.

I also think that he prefers to eat earlier in the night now. It seems now he would like to start eating at 8, when previously he didn't start showing pre-feeding behaviors until around 10.

As long as he's eating and eating well, then I'm happy.
