Pimbura ocular scale pic needed

HerpZillA Aug 18, 2006 12:24 AM

Hi, several years ago, I found a great picture/drawing of the difference of the ocular scale structure on the Molurus pimbura compared the bivittatus and molurus molurus (Indian). I've had many burms, and very close friend with Indians years ago. but this pimbura is a little new to me. But I saw a "burm" at a shop and it was odd, smaller tighter pattern, more creamy color. I asked what was the temperament. He said very nasty!! So, I'd love to check the ocular scales, but I can not find the site that had this great comparisons. So if anyone knows of a site, or has a nice pic, I would deeply appreciate it. 1 to check this 1 snake, and 2 save it for my records.

Thanks much in advance

Big tom

I don't know if this was the site you were looking for but here is a page from Mark O'Shea's site. Seems to have a scan of what you described.

Thanks, but thats M.m. bivitattus (burm) and M.m.molurus Indian)

I am looking for the ceylonise. Or M. m. pimbura.

BUT that is the pic. I just need to know what the pimbura is? Using a little logic i would think it would be teh same as the Indian?

Thansk for the help. Pimbura is teh smallest and nastiest of the Molurus. Not CITES 1 like I think the Indians are? but also not near the size. Everyone is trying to go dwarf on the big sp, so this has become popular more.

The ocular scale configuration will not help you much to distinguish molurus of Indian origin from molurus found on Sri Lanka as they are usually identical. The main keys are mostly pattern differences. The almost total lack of the arrow pattern on top of the head when adults, and a large number of "H" pattern blotches on the body will indicate a specimen from Sri Lanka. Indian molurus will still maintain the latter half of the arrow marking on the head and not show the well defined "H" pattern shapes like the Sri Lanka pythons. I have attached below a few photos of my Sri Lanka animals that will help with the ID. The head photo shows the upper labial in contact with the orbit as is also the case with Indian molurus. The other photo of the anterior body shows the characteristic "H" markings. The photo of the large specimen shows that not all Sri Lanka specimens are aggressive. Mine are more nervous than mainland molurus, but can be easily handled. They are CITES Appendix I and are synonymous with Indian molurus for enforcement purposes. Animals already in the U.S. are not under CITES jurisdiction, but are governed by the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Full grown adult females average 10 to 12 feet, with adult males averaging around 7 or 8 feet.

OK thanks. In short, the pimbura matchs th ocular of the M.m.molurus (Indian) We've had those, but 30 years ago.

Like I said, i was just looking at a competitors shop. And a "burm" caught my eye. We've had 100's of burms. Super yellow to super dark. This one was just different , but I know not an Indian, or I would have bought it one the spot.

I'll have to go back and re-examine. I did not really look it over, i was in a hurry.

I REALLY appreciate all the info. As odd as it sounds, weird stuff like this does shows up. last year I bough a red tail boa at our shop. I HATE gray boas, and this was very gray, I offered $20 lol as we had a shop full. He wanted $50, I stuck out $30 and he took it. A worker set it up. I never really looked it over up close. I thought just another boa.

It was an anery boa. we sold it for $500. I now look a little closr to all animals coming in. We just got a hypo reduced pattern male boa. I will not mention what we paid. But we have
3-4 6'-8'BCI feamles for him next year.

Anyways, many many thanks. If it turns out to be a find, I'll post it. But I do not recall that pink head. But did not have teh full "V". HHmmm maybe I'll take my cam, and take some pics too..

Well thanks..

I have to get to that shop. I do get in that area, but it's about 60 miles from where I live. I might be in the area with spare time next week. I will post if anything good or close to a possible pimbura.
