Do I handle my snake when its in shed?

Strykerking Aug 18, 2006 05:44 PM

I've only had my snake for almost two weeks now. I'm pretty sure he's about to start shedding because his eyes are cloudy. Can anyone tell me if I should handle him while in this process? I've been trying to handle him everyday but I don't know if I'm supposed to while he's shedding. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Oh yah, it's a Califonia king about 15".
I'm guessing he's about a year old.

I don't but will feed during the cycle as most of my snakes will eat. You should maybe give it a rest and maybe a day in between handlings. Just my opinion, you can do what you like it is your snake. I just give mine some "down time" sometimes.

Avoid feeding live food during shed. Since vision is impaired, the prey is more likely to injur the snake.

But yes - all but one of my snakes will eat during shed cycle. One refuses to. Generally I don't offer if I know they are getting ready to shed, but I have before - and only one refuses. He eats just fine after shed though.

This phase of the shed is when snakes prefer to retreat and not be bothered. So, the snake and you have nothing to gain by handling during this time.
