check indigosnakes.com, therer may be one or two there. the big hoop to jump through won't be the federal permit (although it costs $100) but the NYSDEC permit which you will need to maintain the snakes in NY. I am in upstate NY and going through the same process. Good luck to you!

Daveb - What part of N.Y I live in Putnam County - Carmel
I have 3 Indigo's 14 year old male - 4 year old female & 1 year old female. Lost my 15 year old female this spring - Egg bound. Been trying to breed for many years - no luck.
As for Permits. I've had my NY state permit for 15 years - never had a problem

I am in syracuse.
I don't think that getting the permit is "difficult" just has to be done carefully so it isn't flagged/rejected.

Larry,
I have kept and bred easterns in NYS.I sold the adults, and let the permit lapse. WELL, I applied for a permit last year, and got one. NOW the catch. You can keep a pair, or as many as you want, BUT you CANNOT BREED them in NYS OR sell the hatchlings!! AND, they have to be pit-tagged when they are 6 months old. Needless to say, my permit is sitting in the drawer, unrenewed. If anything has changed since 2005, let me know guys.
Thanks,
Mike Collalto

I emailed NYS and asked the following:

My intention is to legally obtain a pair of eastern indigo snakes (Drymarchon corais couperi) in order to raise them, breed them and legally sell the offspring. First of all, is this possible? Here is what I have been told by another NY State person:

"You can keep a pair, or as many as you want, BUT you CANNOT BREED them in NYS OR sell the hatchlings!! AND, they have to be pit-tagged when they are 6 months old."

NYS promptly responded as follows:

That information you have is only partially correct. You can keep a pair, or as many as you want (within reason), but NOT as pets and NOT without the proper licenses. Eastern indigos are federally listed as a threatened species, therefore a license from DEC is required to possess them for exhibition or propagation. A permit from the US Fish and Wildlife Service may also be necessary (see the attached .pdf). It is your responsibility to determine if a federal permit is necessary, and you may not undertake any activities authorized under your state license until you obtain the corresponding federal permit.

The snakes and their progeny may only be sold or transferred to another person who is fully licensed (both state and federally), and under no circumstances may the progeny be sold as pets in New York State. One must have an Endangered/Threatened Species License to possess a threatened species and these licenses are not issued for animals being kept as pets. Your information is correct that all animals must be PIT-tagged when they reach 6 months.
