Appropriate Food Items?

renland Aug 19, 2006 04:58 PM

I have three little guys, one of which was sold to me eating f/t small mice and the other two sold to me eating rat pups. The stores around me don't seem to be getting in anything other than adult rats, so my question is this: what would be an equivalent food item for me to feed the two on rat pinks? Could they take small mice as well? Ideally, I would like to breed my own rodents, but right now that's not possible. Any info is appreciated--thanks!

Yes, you can feed multile small items but i try to stay away from doing that. I have a female who should be eating small rats but only taks mice. she refuses to eat multiple prey items so i had to resort to sitting with her while she eats and following a small rat behind the mouse. Did you ask why your pet store doesnt get smaller prey items? do you have any other places near you?

Thanks for the reply. I get my frozen rodents at Petco because they are the only supplier near me. I've noticed recently that all of their stock (four stores worth!) is going down, and they are not really re-ordering. I asked today, and they said that they order based on what they feed their animals. Okay....how about the consumer looking to purchase?? Anyway, should I be ok with feeing a mouse for now? I have never really seen the size of a rat pup, so I'm not sure if they are comparable. Thanks.

You should be fine feeding a mouse. Rat pups are the size of mice but plumper. The mouse can be as big as the widest part of your snakes body. That's the guide I use.
Petsmart also carries frozen rodents. They'd probably order you what you need.
Best of luck!

I just put an order in to Rodent Pro for rat pinks. I was in the same boat (Petco for feeders) and could not get what I needed. I get 100 for 52 dollars shipped.

I'm the reptile specialist at my nearest Petco, and if they told you they order based on what they feed their animals, that's bull. The frozen rodents should be on an auto-replenish system, especially now that they're being sold in individual packs instead of the godawful bulk bags.

Could be that's just a San Diego area thing, though, since corporate can walk through without warning at any time.
Ask the General Manager (specifically request to speak to him/her, regardless of who else is actually "on duty".) about ordering the size of frozen food you need, 'cause they can and will order it.

Also - I've never seen frozen rat pups, just the mice. At least, not at Petco.
