Spiders? Saw someones presale @ $900 for males - can imagine you could pick one up at the show for less.

Are you sure you know what you are talking about? Presale??? How did you get in on "Presale"? Not sure what "Presale" is. There are those who wish to sell for less on Friday to the vendors and then close shop and enjoy the beach. Why would you consider this "Presale" and post it as if it were a set price for market?

EmberBall Aug 20, 2006 08:54 PM

If you are "not sure what presale is", then why attack someone about it? What she is probably saying is, she saw an ad for a Spider that was due to hatch, and the breeder was pre selling animals before they hatch.

toshamc Aug 20, 2006 09:03 PM

For those that are still catching up - lots of breeders have "Pre Daytona Sales" the week prior to Daytona - check the classifeds you'll see the ads.

Oh really? You know "Lots" of breeders? You've been keeping ball pythons for about a year-and-a-half. The only thing you know about is chiming in on every post on this forum and spreading misinformation.

You've been misinformed

hey if they can sell labradoodles, puggles, schnoodles, and all those other muts that people sell as made up breeds and people pay $1000 or more for them and they only live 10 to 15 yrs. our snakes can live 25-40 yrs theres no reason we should be as low as we are. all should at leat be 1k and normals should be like 500

just my thoughts from a vet tech point of view

Hah, if normals were 500 dollars I wouldn't hesitate to breed my normal girlie, and willingly adopt in surplus snakes.

The difference between those godawful dogs and our snakes is that the dogs are actually a bit more difficult to get your hands on. Normal balls are eeeeeverywhere.

doesn't count unless he's still got his cajones!

and aren't those beastly little dogs everywhere too?

toshamc Aug 20, 2006 05:00 PM

Oh god - with Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and all those teenie boppers carrying those stupid little dogs around - it got so bad that last year that there was a big cry out to parents to stop buying those damn small dogs for their kids - because they were so oversold and people started finding them so annoying that they were flooding the shelters with them.

Same will go for balls to --- I mean - recent surveys show that up to 75% of the reptiles purchased for pets either end up neglected, dead, given up or abandoned within 12 months of purchase. I keep seeing people aspire to bring these beautiful morphs down in price so that people can enjoy them for pets thereby expanding the market - but this is the reality and it's not a pretty one to strive for - pretty sad if you ask me. I say keep the prices high and maintain exclusivity - but what the hell do I know.

When there is less money to be made and people start dumping thier collections to go back to work - aww never mind please see "what the hell do I know" statement above ......

Working at a Petco means I see the best and the worst of such things...usually the worst though. A lady brought in her five chihuahuas and they nearly ate me alive, the evil little beasties.

Same goes for ball pythons. I've actually just adopted a wonderful male from a family that was just plain tired of him - along with his extremely large cage and heat lamp. Taking the tank home, we actually had to stop and take the snake out and just dump out the faux-carpet stuff they were using as bedding because it smelt so bad.
It's really, really hard to sell a snake knowing that in a few years it'll begin going through a long chain of owners that'll tire of it in a few months or years, and pass it along to someone else, who may or may not take proper care of it.
deeeepressing.

But hey, when people start dumping collections to go back to work... I'LL TAKE EM I'LL TAKE EM!!

jyohe Aug 20, 2006 05:46 PM

same thing happened to them

........emus..$40000 breeding pair....2000 plus for baby......

I could get them $60 adult and $7 and up for baby....

True, the price dropped on the mutts, I mean "poodle crosses". People realized that there is no guarantee that they won't shed or be hypo-allergenic.

How much does a hand-raised bird cost? Granted, they may require more work (by the breeder), but the new owner doesn't even plan to breed them.

Chance Aug 20, 2006 10:05 PM

Hah, I actually breed emus and rheas and aspire to breed balls. They're definitely two totally different worlds, but maybe not so different as one might think. The ratite (emus, rheas, ostriches, etc) market took off in the late 80s/early 90s because of the potential they had in the ag industry for their meat, skin, oil, and such. It was the breeders' market mentality that ultimately led to the industry's downfall. Had people kept prices reasonable, it's very likely that ratite products would be far more popular than they are today.

I've found ratites now to be more of a pet market, believe it or not. I have an unending waiting list of people wanting chicks and/or hatching eggs that I'll never satisfy. Also, I've been finding no difficulty in getting $50 for baby emus, and could get more if I wanted to! I also easily get $50 for gray rheas and $100 for whites. This winter I'm actually hoping to start breeding a codom emu color morph (blonde being the het, white being the homo) to diversify my emu flock's colors. Anyway, WAY off topic, but fun to talk about nonetheless I could go on and on about these birds.
