"Underwood (1967) considered Lampropeltis as derived from Elaph on the basis of similarity of a long intrapulmonary bronchus, a series of skull characters, presense of similar scale tubercules, similar arrangement of pits on the head, and similar paired pits on trunk scales"

Does anyone know the characters that separate Elaph (Pantherophis) from Lampropeltis?

Assumiond you mean the Corn Shake (E. g. gutatta)? Among other things: body cross-section shape (loaf of bread vs. cylindrical); keeled scales (weakly keeled vs. unkeeled); body scale row counts (don't have it handy); head/neck shape (head noticably wider vs. almost not); body build (slender vs. stocky); diet (warm blooded specialist vs. omnivore}.

Plus, between equal weight opponents, the King will kick the Corn's a$$!

There's got to be more thjat I can't remember.
