Small viv. lighting ?

bsank May 20, 2003 09:57 AM

I was wondering about lighting options for a smaller vivarium (10 gal.). I have a gro-lux bulb which emits most of its light in the blue and red spectrum. Would a full spectrum light be better, I don't want too much plant growth. But I don't want them all burned either. My plants are all low light.

Either screw in compact fluorescents or a couple 13 watt power compact kits from AH Supply would be great. In your case, I'd probably go with a 23 watt Verilux screw in compact fluorescent. I have one on my low light planted Uroplatus viv and the plants (schefflera, pothos, philodendrons) do well. If you wanted UV, there is also the Super UV Coil Lamp by ESU which comes in a 20 watt version. Both of these have color temp of around 5000-6000K, with CRI above 80, which makes them aesthetically pleasing as well.

Has anyone had any experience with GE Sunshine(Chroma 50) flourescents? I know people who keep reptiles use it but would it work for a planted vivarium?

i use the sunshine lights on the firebely toads. i have only used them for about a 2 weeks but it seems the color of my toads are more of a "neon" then before (lighter in color). and it seems my moss is doing better as well.
