You guys will love this one!

HerpZillA Aug 19, 2006 09:57 PM

OK, from reading my post, you should know I help a friend at his shop. Today I had one of those guys, that thought he was a master corn breeder, because he has 4-5 corns. Asking questions, and never listening to an answer, if I even had one.

OK, he asked if I could get a hypo abbott corn.

NOW, if i'm wrong, which I often am. The joke is on me. But how can you have a hypo abbott? Since the abbott is a widening of the black saddle, and hypo is the absense of the black saddle.

I just told him they are very rare and I have never actually seen one. But if I find one, I'll let him know.

I also have a guy that is trying to cross a burmese with a BCI.

I just thougth I'd share.

To get technical, hypomelanistic refers to a reduction in the AMOUNT of black pigment, OR the INTENSITY of the black pigment.

In the reduction of intensity, what's normally black becomes a shade that varies from cinnamon brown to a bronze sort of colour to a medium brown colour.

Just some info.

Tell the idiot with the Burm and BCI breeding plans I wish him all the luck in the world. LOL

Yes, agree on hypo. So how can you have a hypo abbott?

Thats like saying I want to add a power to my 454 chevelle to go slower.

That metaphor maybe better than my platypuss?

Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk.

Ya got to love working with people, to actually do it.

Of course you could have a hypo Abbott...depending on what the definition of an Abbott is. There are hypo Okeetees being produced by breeders. I found a few by doing a Google image search for "hypo okeetee corn."

But what the heck is an Abbotts? Yes, I know it's a wide-bordered corn selectively bred by someone with the last name of Abbott. But can that name apply to any Okeetee with wide borders?

If so, how wide must the borders be? It seems that the ones nearest to the tail are the widest in most corns, while the borders near the anterior are the most narrow.

At any rate, there are different degrees to hypomelanism. Hypo doesn't always reduce the amount of black, sometimes it simply reduces the INTENSITY of the black, making it grey.

The idea of makig a hypo Okeetee is to get a snake even brighter than a typical Okeetee. I'm not sure that has worked so well, as it seems the orange is duller, rather than more intense. On the other hand, hypo snakes in general don't get the dark "wash" of black pigmentation that non-hypos get.

So, hypo Okeetees? Yes. Hypo Abbott's? Maybe, it depends on your definition. I don't think many people are pursuing hypo Abbott's though, and I've never seen one offered for sale with the name "Hypo Abbott's."

hypo okees are out there...

to make a hypo Abbott...........Abbott would have to do it.........

if you or I do it ,,it would be half Abbott and half hypo then back bred the hets to make hypo okees that are half Abbott only

so someone tell him to do it...I don't have his phone number.....

grey bordered Abbotts ' would be cool

How about a half ring of black? So it looked like a bunch of C's. 1/2 hypo 1/2 abbott.

THEN, we work on reverse C's.

Yes it is a buyers market. It it will just get better. At least in my area.

WOW, that was longer than my stuff.

1 this guy had no idea what hypo options was.

2 he was just throwing terms out.

3 breeding a hypo "Lee Abbott Okeetee" is like taking a lucy black rat and trying to make it solid black. IF, you are talking about the definition that is teh one usually used. "Removal of black pigment"

4 to me the two goals are opposed.

Tim, if you chad been there, you would have laughed. it was a new level of wacked. Unless you count the boa python cross.

Yeah, but I guess it depends on if you have the "ways and means" to support them. Owning a "fantasy" reptile is one thing, being able to take care of it is another.

There would be some sort of crocodile, a Sulpher Monitor, Blue Tree Monitor, Shingleback Skink, San Francisco Garter Snake, Indigo Snake, Flower Turtle (Cuora galbinifrons), Three Striped Box Turtle (Cuora trifasciata), Japanese Giant Salamander & Goliath Frog.

That would be my "Top Ten List" (not necessarily in that order).

Tim

HerpZillA Aug 21, 2006 09:52 AM

leave it to Tim to add a clause to a fantasy.

DUDE it's a fantasy. I had a komodo,, maybe now a lucy one?
I had my fantasy Island all picked out too. Cherry Adirondack chair, diet Pepsi machine that makes it taste like regular, from 1972 fountains. Goodman's corn beef with no calories. And a herp care people 0.5, all 37-24-36.

You need to work on them fantasies

Anyways, a few people picked Indigos. Kind of surprised since they are available. Guy in Columbus has them, and as long as you are not selling out of state it's legal. As far as I know.

You'd know far more on the local laws.

Surprising list to me. I thought more turtles.

Part of the "fantasy" is having enough time and space to take care of the animals and enjoy them. A friend of mine on Ohio offered to sell me his indigo. Until you see and hold one "in person" it's hard to put into words what an awesome and different snake they are. But the issue with me is that they're high maintenance, messy, and require a large cage - as they are active snakes, more closely related to racers that rat snakes. Thus, the "ways and means of proper maintenance" comes into play when owning a "fantasy" herp.

Tim, you forget how old I am. I remember Indigos very very well. In fact I wanted the one George had in the old black built in cages in front on the first side, lower right cage was the Indigo's.

Also I was the cage cleaner. So I really remember that part.

Yes a great snake.

It's a good question. It's a Columbian redtailed boa. Although not a true red tail by most. BCI is Boa constrictor imperator, true red tails are BCC Boa constrictor constrictor. Surinames and Guyanas are true red tails and "I think" a few more.

Joke was crossing a boa (new world snake) (HHmmm for the most part). I know Tim will nail me on a Madagascar boa. And Pythons are generally old world. One gives birth live, one eggs. Now that would be a hybrid.

An anacontic!
