Using old aquarium

Minuet Aug 19, 2006 10:13 PM

Hi folks,

I'm new to reptiles and am getting a pair of leopard geckos soon. I would like to use an old 29 gallon tank, but it is real cloudy from the water used in it. Is there anything anyone can recommend I use to get it clear again? Can I even get it clear again? I don't want to purchase a new tank, but guess I will if I have too.

Thanks!

Try using vinegar! That might help!

Bleach, cause you'll want it good and disinfected before you put any new animals in it. About 10% solution in water is a good disinfectant, and then rinse like crazy to make sure you get the bleach out.

Just make sure you don't use bleach together with vinegar. The result can be deadly... to YOU! An acid bleach = chlorine gas.

Good point! Definitely don't use them simultaneously!

If the vinegar doesn't work, something more harsh like CLR or Lime Away may be necessary to clear the hard water stains. I live in an area with very very hard water, and I know what a pain it is to remove. If you do use it, make SURE the chemicals are all rinsed away before housing your geckos.
