Saddlebacked snapper

johandley Aug 20, 2006 08:02 AM

Just received a 7.5" SCL Common Snapper from someone who found it outgrowing his ability to keep it. It appears healthy in every way, has lived for the last two years on a diet solely of Reptomin and other processed Herp food (apparently refuses other foods, though it did eat a smelt last night). Oddly, it has a rather concave shape to it, both carapace and plastron. Its carapace sinks in around the 3rd costal, and its plastron also is curved inward. Is this unusual for snappers? I've never seen one with a carapace shaped like this. It's a little like the old 'Cap Center' in Landover, MD. Thanks, I'll see if I can post a pic of it later on.

Here's an image of the snapper mentioned above.

Looks like too much protein to me. If the diet was fish, worms and reptomin he would probably have a much more normal shell.

I think fish and worms ARE protein. The snapper in the post above (about a galvanized filter set-up) was given to us earlier this month. He is said to be 4-5 years old, and raised on Wardly's turtle sticks. His 9" carapace seems to be normal shaped. We ARE working to get his diet to be more varied. I would like to include trout chow.
