Help with RACK

bigdee Aug 20, 2006 09:38 AM

Hey all,

I just got about 6 sterilite 41Q tubs for $6.00 @ targets. Im looking to build a rack for balls and I wanted to use malamine shelves and maybe plywood sides to cut down on weight. I know I read of some here using pre made shelves but I went to loewes and cant find anything wider then 12". Any ideas for someone who is not experienced at building? Can anything else other than malamine be used for shelves?

I have used melamine, plywood and hollow core doors for rack shelves. Each come with their own set of pros and cons.

I would look a bit harder for melamine before you rule it out.

If you want to cut down on weight then dont build solid sides. There is really no need or point imo, all it does is add weight and cost. Run strips (like legs) on the ends instead of using a solid piece. I have done it on all the racks I have built and they have always worked great and I have also sold several racks and everyone has liked them with the sides like that.

Home depot has the shelves that work perfectly for the 41 qt tubs. They are around 40-50 each rack (I used 2 for the below pictured rack) Each shelf measures 2'x3'.

They work wonderfully. You have to pull the tubs out at a slight angle if you go long ways, but if you use the narrow end they slide in and out perfectly.

Randy,

I keep meaning to try this but I don't have a Home Depot in my area. I may pick one up this weekend, however.

Why do you have to pull the tubs out at an angle? Is there some sort of lip or something that could be milled down?

Also, does AirCapitalConstrictors no longer exist?

Howdy Chris sir. The deal with acc is the server had a major malfunction thusly deleting half of the files/info and it needs to be moved by the server host. (gotta love it huh). No clue on when its going to be fixed though.

The reason the tubs have to be pulled out at an angle is the legs per level are slightly closer together then the length of the tubs. Its a minimal angle though, and even with that I still keep the rack length wise to save floor space.

did you have to cut the legs or something? or does the height adjust?

bigdee Aug 28, 2006 05:03 PM

Well I went to homedepot today and saw some malamine shelves but the widest one was 16" and 24". The 41q tubs are 16 1/2" wide so how can the tubs be used in racks without buying a whole peice of malamine and have home depot cut it? which I hear is not a good idea. I did see the plastic rack shelf but I dont want to have to use the lids.

Randall_Turner Aug 29, 2006 03:22 AM

You can attach boards to the bottom of the plastic shelves to make them lidless racks. One of my friends did this using peg board because he's anti lid and it works great for him. I'm pro lid so didn't go with that step for mine.

If you don't have the tools to cut it yourself, try a local cabinet shop. Go there with a list of pieces you want and they should be able to quote you a price for the pieces you need cut to size. Another decision to make is edge banding? Makes it look a lot cleaner and seals the edges. Again, if you can't do it yourself, the cabinet shop can.

All of these racks were made from sheet stock. I have all the tools so cutting and edgebanding were not an issue
