Mack snow versus Normal leo

katykd Aug 20, 2006 09:55 AM

It's interesting and funny at the same time but what is so called mack snow here in US was the first leopard gecko I saw in a pet store in Europe 10 years ago and fell in love with these animals.
They were for sale for about $13 ...!And were known like normal leopard gecko... Now they cost a little more you can buy one for about $25-35.
I would say mack snow in US are mostly (I wouldn't say all of them!)normal morph
Go check on this site http://www.macksnow-leopardgeckos.de/html/tiere_fur_hamm.html

and look for yourself how "real" Mack Snow look like.

Any suggestions?

It all comes down to genetics. The mack snow is a codominant trait. So the normal one as you are calling them are the mack codoms. They due tend too be lighter(pastelish) then most normal wild types.
They are basicly visual hets to the super form. So when you bred a codom to a codom you can get the super snow morph and more codoms, etc.
Whe you bred a normal to a normal you will only get normal babies.
there is a little explaination after the pics here-

Hi there,
I didn't have time during the week to write but after I read all your responses I can only say that Sara2 was trying to answer my actual question. Thank you sara2!

I think now I understand a little bit more. So you saying the "normal" ones I saw 10 years ago at the pet stores where actually mack snow, closer to a wild form of leopard gecko. Yes, that can make sense. I remember they were selling them as Eublepharis macularius fasciolatus or pakistan leopard gecko. That was the only form/morph of leopard gecko I ever saw until I found myself on internet searching 6 years ago and found a websites such us geckoranch.com and others. I was amazed how beatiful are they, tangerine, carrot tail ... I was so excited when I was traveling to U.S. and was thinking about all those leos waiting for me to choose from. Yes, they all were here!
But when I wanted to find a normal one, that one which was in my mind as normal I have seen in pet store 10 years ago, I found it difficult.Normals looked different how I was remember...

I have also some pictures of them in old magazines where you could see what I am talking about but there is no way I could show them.

thanks sara2 again for your explanation.

I did not understand that at all. A mack snow is a mack snow wherever you go. That rhymed.

You could not be any more wrong!!!

Macks are a co-dominant gene.... They are far from the "normal morph"....

Sometimes people should do a bit more research before they make a statement in a post like they know what they are talking about!!!

But a fair number of those photos have been stolen from various breeders found in the US.

The 2nd site is www.lizardlair.net

Though the page is in German, it does mention the sources of the geckos. Looks as if they are selling on consignment or these are surplus animals from the previous mentioned breeders. Not sure you could say they were stolen.

Running the page through babelfish.altavista.com I get the following text for the top paragraph:

Here see to her the animals still for the stock exchange in Hamm available are. The animals come from Alex (www.alexhuereptiles.com) and Shelly (www.lizardlair.net) from America.

For larger pictures please in the respective photo click.
