Help with a decison

Joeycoco98 Aug 20, 2006 10:30 AM

I really would like to get a JCP but i am unsure of their disposition. Do they always calm down or is it a 50/50 shot of one becoming docile? I get different oppinions so not sure if this will be a wise purchase for me. I have owned Boas and Burms so not new to pythons just this species.

Thanks,
Miller

this is MY exp with mine. he is very docile with handling. hes 7 foot now an i got him when he was around 3 at a petstore. i know...don't by from petstores but this one has a reptile area and the guy is very knowledgeable so went with the purchase. told me is previous owner was a school teacher so my jpc was handled alot by kids. he has only tried to go for me once...at feeding time...my mistake.
anything with a mouth is capable of biting. it all depends on the individual. i've read some on here that have very docile JCP's and others are like you can't go near them. i think in general though they are nice docile snakes.

I agree with Janome *waves* I have a young JCP, and she's only 4 months old. I can do just about anything with her and she's really only "threatned" me a couple of times. But I was either in a rush or I scared her a little bit so it wasn't really her fault and I probably deserved to be bit. Just last night I had another person hold her, after washing their hands though, and all she really did was look at him. Was really quite funny watching them stare at each other. LOL. And she is my first snake ever, I've been wanting one for ages. And really if you want a docile one it really depends on how much you handle them. I got lucky with mine and she really wasn't that nippy to begin with.

First off, I LOVE carpets! I have had Boas and currently have 3 Carpets (2JCPs and an IJ) The IJ was great out of the shut but my female JCP was nippy and nervous for the first year and a half. My male JCP is not quite a year and will bite repeatedly and crap all over me. I never had a bad Boa. Most adult Carpets I see in local reptile shops are extremely nasty. I think that’s why they are for sale, I don’t know. That being said, I like carpets because they aren’t as common as Red Tail Boas. Have you ever seen a crayon yellow boa? You have to ask your self, can you handle being bit. It’s more psychological than painful…if you don’t pull away when you get bit. If you do you will get shredded, if you don’t it’s just a nip.

I not trying to dissuade you from Carpets, they are great (with work), but they aren’t (usually) the sweet pies you have been told about.

i disagree i currently have a jcp and i have had many carpets in the past and i have never had any problems. babies are usually nippy but it has been my experience that they calm down after a few months. the jcp i have now strikes alot but never opens its mouth. i also have boas but theres nothing like a nice looking carpet, you just cant compare. i say go for it, you cant go wrong with a carpet

I Disagree, you can't generalize any species of snake as "tame". Regardless of how certain individuals are, I got two carpets both about 4 years old, ones about 6 ft the others about 7, There both completely docile almost like little dogs. Ive had Vicious Carpets that were meaner than my retic's, the only time my carpets have ever gone after me was during feeding, Huge feeding respone, exactly like my retic's actually. Every animal will be different, If you work with snakes your bound to get bitten sooner or later, so who cares. not like there cobras and can kill you.

Good luck, and Carpets are amazing

that is true you cant generalize boas are usually tame but the first snake i had was a boa that i bought as ia baby and it was a bastard so youre right. then again ive seen gtps as tame as kittens but your right you will eventually get bitten and if you continue to buy snakes no matter what they are you will eventually get an aggressive one thats part of the fun of it.
