Is freezer burn mice or rats burn bad for snakes. I have heard that snakes can get sick from things like that. Is that true?

Freezer burn is really just the animals' cells that have been pierced and damaged by expanding ice crystals formed by freezing water vapor in the air. These damaged cells are really, at worst, just nutrient deficient.

Have implicated freezer burnt prey to impactions due to becoming dehydrated. However I can not corroberate these stories. Personally I thaw most of my prey in warm water, so my animals take in plenty of fluids at the same time any way. I have only ever had one animal die of food impactions (determined via necropsy showing no other foreign material than feces, which contained no foreign material either) and it was eating fresh killed hamsters.

Just one school of thought, so take it as you will.

I don't believe in luck. Luck is God covering your a** when you screw up.

A few years ago I read on the python forum that thawed food may contribute to dehydration or nutrient deficiency over time but I never heard of freezer burn being harmful. I have heard of many snakes not accepting freezer burned prey but that is a preference thing.
