feeding baby ringneck snakes

kellywood23 Aug 20, 2006 01:19 PM

Hey all,

I have aquired myself a very young ringneck snake with is about 6" in length. In fact, he came to me because he was "in" my house drinking out of my dogs water bowl.

Anyways I know that they eat earthworms and insects, but how do I get this little guy to eat for me? I bought some worms, but he ignores them.

Any hints as to feeding and a proper setup would be great!

Thanks so much!

Thanks

Where are you or do you know which subspecies it is? The different subspecies of ringnecks vary quite a lot in diet. Some (prairie from the northern part of its range) might do best with small worms, some (northern) with small salamanders, some (southern) with small tree frogs, some (western subspecies) with tiny lizards or snakes.

Hi Billy,

Thank you for replying. I am located in NW Arkansas. Would that be considered southern?

This little snake is basically a hatchling measureing out at 4-5". How small of food are we talking here?

Thanks again!

You are best off letting the snake go.

It will take small salamanders or worms. Usually they only want salamanders though... So if you can get some small ones and freeze them, thaw them out once a week, and put it in a small deli cup with the snake and leave it in the dark.

With worms this technique doesn't usually work, but it will with babies that have been in captivity for a while. When I get babies to take worms, they are usally in a more natural set up... With bark and leaves and soil... And worms are placed near the snake when it's out roaming or when you can see it hiding without disturbing and you drop the worms near it.

Hey Mike,

I took your advice and let him go. I tried many attempts at feeding him worms and other critters, but got nowhere. Just the thought of feeding a lizard to him though was something I was not willing to do.

From now on, if a snake gets in the house, I will just turn it loose outside again.

Thanks again
