Those that use cypress mulch, where do you get it? I've tried the local Home Depot and Lowes as well as one or two high end nurseries and they all look at me like I'm crazy.

I would like to find a local source near me (I'm In Southern California) that is a little easier to get to then my other bedding suppliers.

I buy mine at Menards, you don't have those in SoCal. The bag I buy is labeled "Cypress Mulch" I bet they have something similar but don't recognize the title I would check for myself if I was you. However I wouldn't be suprised if you have none at all the west coast stores often sell redwood bark or mulch because thats what they have close by.

If you can't find it you might check with local tree trimmers, the kind that chip the trees on site. You might be able to get some tree mulch for free, I did that long ago in the LA area. It saved them the cost of transport and landfill fees. Just make sure you know what type of tree it is.

Another thing Cypress trees don't grow in southern California, hence is why its difficult to find and few people know about it. However there are other mulchs available to you but what type of animal is this for?

I'm in oregon and I can get it at one of the local pet stores.
I think bean farm carries it also.

in the cages/supplies section. There are numerous ads for big bags of cypress mulch.

I live in So. Cal. and have checked Home Depot, Lowes, Do It Center,and numerous nurseries. I have not been able to find cypress mulch at any of these locations. The mulch that was available was not acceptable. Red dye, redwood, cedar, etc.
I ended up buying a bag of aspen instead.

Thanks for all the responses, guess I'll keep searching. I'd like to try it as an experimental bedding in one of my B.c.imperator enclusure. Done most of the other bedding routines, just wanted to try this one. Currently they are on newspaper.

I wanted to avoid the whole Herp specific suppliers for a couple of reasons - shipping can be high, I've found in most cases they charge a small fortune for something you can find at a local supplier cheaper, etc.

I myself use Newspaper for all my RTB cages. It is the cheapest most readily available product. Its also the easiest to clean and maintain proper husbandry. It doesn't harbor insects, but does have problems maintaining humidity and temperature in a poorly controlled enclosure.

I have a monitor and I have been reading that potting soil is a GREAT if not the BEST thing out and I want to change to that instead of mulch for my Monitor... It is made to keep bugs out, its cheap, it doesnt have harmful chemicals (obviously because it would kill the plants) and monitors love it... Let me know what you all think and if you have herd about this.. Any brand anyone uses?

But does it compact well?

I along with quite a few others agree that Decomposed Granite is probally the best bang for your buck. It holds moisture yets drains, it compacts well for burrows but doesn't becme concrete. It is also cheap since you buy it by the yard vs the bag. But thats my opinion.

Decomposed Granite doesn't come from a bag or Home Depot at least not laast time I checked. You have to get it from a rock and gravel place. You pick the color and grade they scoop the dirt and put it in your pickup. We are talking cubic yards not bags, you can have it delivered as well. Pro Exotics uses decomposed Granite, for nearly all the dirt in their cages.

Where do you guys buy your decomposed granite from? I've been looking all over for it via landscape places around my area and even online. I want to use it so bad, but I can't find it anywhere. Thank for your help!
