Bloated wood frog

neslo Aug 20, 2006 09:02 PM

I have about 5-6 small wood frogs (raised from tadpoles) in a 15 gallon vivarium and they've been doing great for the past few months but lately one of them has bloated up like crazy. Does anybody have any similar experience with wood frogs or other frogs? I plan to let them go soon, but I'd like to try to get this one back to normal so he's not a sitting duck!

Thanks!

Without a vet looking at it you can't get a definitive diagnosis as bloat is a symptom of many things and is not a disease in and of itself. It can be caused by bacterial infection, virus, parasites, and poor nutrition to name a few causes.

In any case, I would not suggest releasing the frog if it has symptomns or if you keep any non-native to that area reptiles and/or amphibians and as more and more amphibian (and reptile) diseases are being shown to be spread through this very method (chytrid, ranaviruses to name two). Depending on your state it may also be illegal to release the frogs now that they have been kept in captivity.
