OK, snake movies have reached a new low

Was in the video store today and saw Komodo VS Cobra-if anyone has seen this, how bad is it? I didn't bother, saved the dollar for a beer-it's more enjoyable.

Buy it and put it on e-bay. Last I knew the "Snakes on a Plane" toast was up to over $100.

But then I collect B reptile movies. No reptile based movie is ever going to be "good", like Lord of the Rings good. Producers use herps to scare the public and make them into monsters. I have around 50 reptile themed movies so far, from "attack of the giant gila monster" made in the 1950s, to "Snake Island" and "Komodo". I think "Komodo" has to be one of the truely better ones out there. The CG komodos aren't that bad and they use their septic saliva to take people down. Its pretty good. lol.

All right, Brie! All science and no art is not good for anyone, even the serious enthusiasts on this forum. Plus the movies pose modest risk, never escape or soil the substrate, and are legal in all fifty states. Not sure about a good beginer flick though...

I have that one myself, my only real complaint was how oversized they were(weren't they something like 15 feet?)I did like how they explained the way they showed up in North Carolina(right state?)
-You collect the B reptile stuff too? Ever seen Spasms? Supposed to be a giant venomous snake and every scene is either a live or poorly reproduced retic-fun couple hours.
Komodo vs Cobra did look like a bit of fun, though-typical horror movie where the producers didn't know anything about the critters, right?
Well, hunting season opens next month, my stepbrother and I are always looking for more movies(especially goofy stuff like this) to watch the night before opener-if we can stop playing poker that long.

I'd be willing to bet that if they got good actors and writers and made a story about men working the lighthouse off s. america where they kept getting killed off by that fer de lance varient....they could make an A movie about snakes.

Think of Spiderman compared to all the cheesy superhero movies made over the years or Lord of the Rings vs. all those hundreds of cheesy movies about dragons, magic, knights etc.

Ryan Shackleton Aug 23, 2006 08:28 PM

Yes, it's a bad movie, but quite a FUN bad movie-the snakes and Komodos reminded me of 1970s dinosaur movies, and at least they kept the rednecks out-remember the scene in King Cobra where they're rabbit hunting with deer rifles, AND doing things that no shooter with common sense would consider? That scene was probably more dangerous to a hobby than snake movies to reptile keeping-another fun movie though.

I haven't seen that one, but I tried to watch "Boa" a while back and just couldn't tolerate it. Not just because it was ridiculously impossible, but because it was intensely dull...

I like a lot of goofy movies, but that one was just BAD...

I am a big fan of horror and sci fi thrillers but i have yet to see a good movie involving snakes. Has anyone seen Snakes on a Plane? and if so how was it?

Ryan Shackleton Aug 21, 2006 09:18 PM

I did read the book(novelized after movie production, about $6)-it was interesting enough I will probably break down for this one in the theater. A friend at work saw the movie and liked it-At worst, it's better than a lot of other snake movies.

I miss snake films from the 1970's--like the Strother Martin/Dirk Benedict classic "Ssssss" or even "Frogs!" (which has a lot of cottonmouths). That was good looney fun and best of all had lots of photogarphy with real venomous snakes. In "Snakes on a Plane" Samuel l. Jackson had it written into his contract that he would not have to be within 20 feet of a real snake, which I suspect means lots of cheesy CGI.

LarryF Aug 22, 2006 12:11 AM

I haven't seen "Sssssss" since I was a kid. I guess I'm going to have to order a copy.

"Frogs" was a lot of fun, like you say, just to see the snakes, but the only venomous ones I remember seeing were the cottonmouths.

It was great kinda weird seeing someone killed by a yellow rat, but the tokay gecko was my favorite...

These types of movies are SUPPOSED to be bad.

A lot of them are made with the full intention of being sold in 2nd and 3rd world countries to a target audience of 13 year old males.

They make the movie for a few hundred thousand, put in some babes and voila turn a nice international profit.

My 9 year old talked me into watching (ok I dozed a bit) Python vs. Boa saturday afternoon with him on I think the Sci-Fi channel. Yep...chesty red haired babe, hot blonde....government soldiers, researchers, mercenaries...some armed with cross bows and flame throwers...hero and heroine hook up in the end...bad guys die...world is saved.

Pass the popcorn.

I am disgusted at you all's attitudes on this. Do you realize the damage that these movies to to the image of snakes. I mean come on, don't you realize what will happen the next some someone has a 100 ft python or boa that "accidently" makes a wrong turn and ends up in someone's living room? Or more realisticly, what about when some poor scientist comes across one that just happens to be slithering by in Antarctica? He is going to immediately think back and say this Boa is going to try to kill me just like it did in the movie! (Quiz- Name that Movie)

(You can laugh (or moan) now)
