Classic black King, these guys always put a smile on my face, the pattern typically gets more speckled as you go west in TN, as there are a lot of intergrades.
By the time you reach the southwest corner of the state, you will rarely find a king looking like the one in the photo--most are of the fully speckled variety. I've found nigrita around Nashville that look like the photo, but they change alot just a few hours SW on I40.

Hey thanks so much for helping me out! I caught this animal while I was on vacation. Everyone in Tennessee just called them "black snakes" or Black Racers". To be honest I've never heard of a black kingsnake besides the mexican one. Man I wish I could hold it again, It was so beautiful!

Heh - I remember when I met some people from Halfmoon Bay and they told me their were tons of red racers in the field behind their house.
I was hoping for western coachwhip - but what they had were coast range garter snakes.
