Feeding hatchling alterna

MikeMurphy Aug 21, 2006 07:39 PM

For those of you who are trying to get your alterna babies to eat--don't give up or get frustrated. I've raised LOTS of baby gray bands and I have yet to fail in getting them to eat mice. You just have to stick with it. Try everything. I actually wrote an article on this for Reptiles magazine in the December '01 issue. The tips in the article have worked for me many, many times.

Here's a picture of a Juno Road baby I hatched out about 3 weeks ago. His belly is fat with a thawed pinkie scented with fence lizard. The lizard I use has been in my freezer for about 9 years now. I just keep using him over and over. Prior to scenting with lizard, this snake was not interested in mice (live, thawed, or brained).

Thanks for the info, Mike. Now, if it can be done with gray-bands, then it can be done with eastern hogs, IMO. Often debated on the Hog forum.

I'll have to get a back issue to read that article!
