What kind of snake?

snakesnmore Aug 21, 2006 09:17 PM

Ok so I got this snake from a friend. He had told me that it was a cross between a florida pine and a bull. Others have told me that it was just a bull. I would like to know what you all think it is so I know what I'm dealing with. Thanks for your help.

The characteristics of the pattern behind the head and the number of blotches would lead me to believe it is crossed with a pine snake. It also has more of a pine shaped head. Who knows in todays world of herpetoculture? But that is what I can deduct from what I see.

I agree with Matt,

coloration and pattern can be a mix of those both subspecies. The number of blotches I expect with aprox. 40 body blotches. This is more typical for f.e. a Louisiana pine snake (only to compare – it not a way to produce artificial P. ruthveni!) and lies between the blotch amount of the typical P.m. mugitus and the P.c. sayi.
Yes, I think in an easy morphologic sight it could be a mugitus/sayi intergrade.
But how to divide those intergrades from an odd colored and patternd sayi…?

$0 blotches for Ruthveni is not the typical count, sometimes yes, but not typical, typically it is in the high 20's to low 30's.
