Pics of my two huge gaigeae clutches

philbradley1 Aug 21, 2006 09:19 PM

I posted about these two clutches a month or so ago and finally have gotten around to posting some pics. The females are 7 and 8 years old respectively and are from San Antonio Zoo bloodlines. These are great animals to work with and I don't know why they aren't more popular (I guess it is the lack of morphs). I had one dud in each clutch but that still leaves 38 in the incubator. By the second week of September I should have some babies!

Wow great clutch congrats! I have a year old pair that I hope to breed in the future. Do you find that vermiculite works better than perlite? do you simply leave the eggs like that in the incubator? How do you get the right amount of moisture in the vermiculite?

Thanks,
Zach Cava

I have used vermiculite, perlite, and one season I only used paper towels as substrate (and had 100% hatch success with 3 different colubrid species). I tend to use vermiculite now and like most everyone else I wet it until it clumps together (it is wet enough if you can squeeze a small amount together and it sticks).

Nice clutches Phil. I wish my larger pair would produce like yours. Randy

That's great Phil!

My luck is about like Randy's with the gaigae. I could only get one of my 2 females to lay this year, and of the 14 eggs she produced only 7 are still good.

WOW! And I thought my 15-egg clutch was big! Way to go Phil. How big are the females?
