proper weight?

Turtlequest Aug 22, 2006 07:28 AM

Can someone please give me an average on what the proper weights should be (in grams) from hatchlings to breeding age? Perhaps a 3 month, 6 month, year, etc...?

Thanks.

Weights will vary animal to animal. Males around 18months 600 grams. Females usually around their 3rd winter. some go somme but most go their 3rd year and 1300-1500 grams.

Some people might say sooner and smaller but the general rule is the above it seems.

What do you mean "third winter". Is that the age you should wait to breed the female, or the age they reach max weight?

I guess to simplify my question; how many grams should a male and female be for breeding?

Thanks again.

Well, weight isn't everything when it comes to breeding:

Males are ready to breed once they start producing sperm plugs. However, that doesn't necessarily mean a snake will start breeding females once he starts producing sperm plugs because he may be too immature to fully understand the "mechanics" of breeding. So, look for sperm plugs before you start putting a male with females but don't be surprised if you don't see him locking up with the ladies right away.

Females should be large enough to breed once they are in the 1500g range but again, just because a female reaches that weight, doesn't mean she'll necessarily produce eggs for you. She won't breed until she is mature enough to do so. As the previous poster said, most females achieve the proper weight AND sexual maturity by their third winter.

Hope this helps
