Desert Kings Hatching 52 days incubated

jusmebabe Aug 22, 2006 10:39 AM

My eggs are hatching from a wild caught female (released).
This is first for me hatching snake eggs.
Should I leave them in container eggs were incubated in or move them?
Should I use smallest rubbermaids?
Just a couple of questions I had and I will read my kingsnake book for further info.
I'm all pumped up lol. Pics will come later today or tomorrow.
Take Care,
Joel

I would separate them. It's unlikely that new born hatchlings would eat each other, but not unheard of. The biggest thing I would keep them in is Rubbermaid or Sterilite shoeboxes. Some folks use large deli cups for hatchlings. You can use paper towels for substrate. I give them a hide and a small water dish.

Looking forward to some pics. What location are these from?

I caught the female on the former Ft. Ord. It's between Salinas and Monterey, Ca. aka Central Coast.
I'm going to buy some containers today. I have the 3 out of the egg in critter keepers an get some mini lids for water.

I'm keeping 2 for the kids and figure out to do with the rest later.
Now just waiting for the eggs from wild caught Basin gopher (released) to hatch in about a month.
Forgot, I have a Nikon D50 and the smallest size is 1504X1000 and I can't post. Any ideas on how to get below that size?

Thanx for the info.
Joel

They are in all liklihood California Kingsnakes, not Desert Kings (splendida).

In Linux, you can use The GIMP to resize images.
In Windows, I think MS Paint can resize an image.
Not sure about Mac OS X - but I suspect it comes with something to resize images.

Of course, if you have photoshop or photoshop CE you can use those programs to resize an image.

I'll definitely post more. I looked at the pic you posted and that's what I thought a desert king looked like until I was told otherwise.
I usually keep chameleons but always loved the way ca kings looked.
I have six set up and the other 8 are slit but hiding in thier eggs.

Those are definitely California Kingsnakes.

There is a phase of California Kingsnake known as "desert phase" - which is a striking contrast between black and white bands. Most Cal Kings have some black or chocolate speckling in cream coloured bands, on the edge of the scales.

Desert Phase CA Kings are crisp and clean bands.

Desert Kingsnake is a different subspecies altogether.
