How can I tell the difference between female and male horned frogs?
In short, anything over 4.5 inches is normally female. Anything between 2.5 and 4 is normally male. If it croaks regularly, it is male. Males get raised, dark nupital pads and dark throats during breeding season. Check my horned frog caresheet on the link below for more info. Andy

You probably have to wait until the frog is fully grown. Most males will call from time to time, and they have dark mottling on their throats and bulging little nubs on their hands called nuptial pads, used in mating, but I think you only see those during mating season. If you have a female, you'll know it in a few years when it is larger than a small dinner plate and eating you outta house and home. At least that's what my female does
Seems that females are herder to find in the pet trade, or it could just be in this area. Here's a pic of Azure, a confirmed male; note the darm markings under the throat and the small (3 inch) adult size.

Dark marks under the chin mean nothing. I have seen many females with dark marks. Only a fully black "beard" that males get in the mating season is indicative of sex. Andy

Do you know anything about if all Surinams have the black beards? Both of mine have solid black beards, but it almost looks like you could rub the color off. They have been in the water so it's not dirt or anything. Just wondering, and hoping there is still the possibility I have a male and a female. LOL Which is very unlikely.

Only males should...Andy

Yeah, but should and do are always breakable. My female african clawed frog gets dark wrists like the males do. So anything is possible. But they both probobly are males. I think I'll get them to rest this winter so if there is a feeding problem it won't affect them as mauch.
But both are also gentetic abnormalities and are probably highly inbred. That oculd have something to do with it right there. Andy
