bad shed?

theandrew Aug 22, 2006 02:31 PM

My 1 month old female is in shed and it looks like the old skin in coming off in small peices instead of one large peice. Is this normal?

thanks

Sounds like a humidity (lack thereof) problem. For now, put her in a dampened snake bag or pillowcase, tie it up so she can't get out and put it back in her cage.

Long term you need to look into/fix the humidity. IMO bigest problem most people have is too much ventilation. More ventilation = more moisture loss! My hatchling racks have NO holes in the tubs, the slight gap at the top is more than enough ventilation. Also, since I pull every drawer every day (checking for presents ), I get a decent air exchange daily.

Sheds should be whole, getting torn by crawling across them is common but not coming off in chunks!

And those are only the breeders

I agree with what Dave posted 100%. I would add that if you keep them too hot they will dehydrate no matter how high the humidity is. Little BRBs do fine with temperatures from the high 60s to the low 80s. Go higher than mid 80s with no place to retreat from the heat and they will dehydrate. One other cause of dehydration is parasites. Both internal and external.
