Breeding ethics...part 2

garweft Aug 22, 2006 08:40 PM

Ok the first one covered the when, so this one will cover the why.

Should someone have a reason to breed other that "I want to".

Some people breed animals just because they want to, others have a goal. They try to improve traits, they have a goal of a new double homo that has not yet been seen. So do you need a goal to work toward?

>>So do you need a goal to work toward?

I would say MOST (not all) people are getting into breeding for the same goal...supposed "$$$$"

I would also say that if "I want to" is the reason someone gets into breeding, they too have a goal...it might not be one of the reasons you stated, but "enjoying a cool hobby" is a good goal. That's why I play soccer...It's not to improve my skills or even stay is shape. It's because I want to and enjoy it...my goal is accomplished!

...so, I would say "I want to" can be a legitimate goal...just another way of saying "My goal is to enjoy it!"

good posts, btw...

Agreed - "I want to" is pretty much why I'm going to get into it, if I do. Someday, when I have the money (haha) I want to get into breeding bumblebees, and focus on that particular morph. Make it better, if that's possible, or just breed them because I think they're quite possibly the most gorgeous snake I've ever seen.
Love of the animal (and of how cute the babies are) is plenty enough of a reason for me.

people breed for the cash they think and want to get in return......they want to be millionaires........in 4 years or less.......

here's your sign .......?

.....as for the first one.......

people have websites and company names and answer lots of questions online all the time and then after a year or so they post pics and pots of their "first clutch".....

huh?

yes.some of them actually breed good morphs before they ever bred a cornsnake or a cal king even....

still sad......

...........too bad the ball's secrets were revealed the other year even though I was told noones knows and don't tell all kinds of stuff........

yea........ok......

wonder why I am buying alot of triangulum morphs/locals.......?

I don't understand. Why would someone need to breed corns or kings before ball pythons? And why must they be experienced breeders before they can become knowledgeable enough to answer questions?

I'll admit that I'm new to this. Unless my spotted python pair produce before my balls, balls will be my first. I have been spending a GREAT deal of time on this forum and others, reading books, watching videos, talking to breeders, trying to absorb all the knowledge I possibly can. I want to be able to make as few mistakes as possible, and I want to be able to correctly answer questions when asked. There are many questions asked on this forum and the others that I frequent that are basic husbandry questions that I feel qualified to answer at this point. Answering questions and paying attention to others' answers are great learning tools in and of themselves.

It almost sounds as though you believe "Ball Python Breeders" should be a closed society, and nobody else should be allowed in. If that were true, who would you sell your snakes to????

honestly that post makes no sense. Yes there are people that are buying ball pythons as their first snakes, but what's wrong with that? Their is a wealth of information out there and the only thing it takes to care for these animals is the willingness to read and ask questions. Will the average person that is buying into the ball market make tons of money, no. But the average person will make their money back and some side cash if they are able to follow guidlines that almost any successful breeder will tell their customers. People make a big deal out of others that buy an expensive morph and breed it, that's what every exotic pet market is about at first. Do you think the first hundred people that bought hyacynth maccaws bought them as pets, NOOOOOOOOOOOO. They wanted to make lots of money and they did and still do even though the price has come down substantially. If every ball morph drops down to the $250-1000 mark, a small collection of animals will still pay for itself and a nice vacation each year. Everyone needs to get a grip. Almost every table in daytona made good money. Some maybe only a few thousand in 2 days and other tables well over 100k. I personally saw one deal well over $50k, that sounds like a stable market to me.
