White blotches on my RES's shell? Can anyone provide insight?

Dave.W Aug 04, 2003 12:59 PM

I've had my Red Eared Slider for 10 years now. Got him when he was just barely a hatchling. Anyway, over the last couple of months he's gotten these white/baige blotches on his shell. I've always been careful with his requirements so this is a bit of a mystery to me. Can anyone provide a name to this phenomenon? and maybe even a way to correct it? Thanx, Dave

sounds likea fungus. this is pretty common with semi aquatic turtles.
can you get us a picture?
if it does turn out to be a fungus i would break doen the tank/pond,
clean everything, and refil with water whose pH is lowered to below neutral.
then check to make sure the basking area is warm enough and that theh turtle can get completely dry

I do have a picture and I circled the blotches in green so you know where to look.

well its great that you took a pic but please don't be offended when i tell you that i can't really determine anything from it.
i would imagine though if its white and doesn't smell bad and isnt too soft and gooey that its probaly a common fungus and doing the things i suggested will clear it up
make sure you change your water often though
and get a test kit to check pH ammonia and nitrates to see what the water quality really is.

It's ok I'm not offended lol
The pic was just a typical pic I took a few weeks ago.
Not really a pic to show anything.
But the blotches are not soft at all or slimey.

Thanx for the advice!
