How often do you feed ur blood?

ballpythons18 Aug 23, 2006 04:54 AM

I have a small(18-20" red blood python)I bought him and tried feeding him after one week, refused a rat and a mouse, the following week I tried a rat and a mouse. I pre-killed both and left them both in, a hour later I checked and the mouse was gone. I threw the rat away and yesterday(it's been a week since last feed)I put a pre-killed mouse in their and he refused. So do they normally eat every other week? My other snakes eat every week except when there in shed and or my ball goes off feed. So do blood's also go off feed?

I have found for my two that every 8 days is the magic number. They always eat unless it's shed time. I have one that doesn't eat everytime but he's a grouch and I think likes being that way lol. When he does decide to eat it's an event though. He's a pretty shy guy so conditions must be whatever he decides before he will eat. My female is a pig and outgrowing him rapidly. Btw, they are around a year old.

Hey,
Between 7-10 days is a good number to start with. Work with it and see what works. It won't make a difference as long as you give it food during any of the days within that period. Give food of appropriate size too.

Awesome specimen there. You have to remember it's only been the last few years really that bloods have been thought of by many as a good "pet." I can tell you the reputations of bloods imported years ago were mostly deserved. Good to see you're not feeding live, as this only tends to make a snake more apt to be aggressive. As for feeding I think every 8 days or so is a good estimate.

I have a snake from jersey, that refused to eat for weeks, then I offered a small live meal, he hit so fast, now he eats p/k every week! I think mine just needed a jump start, as for handle'n him, I wouldn't mess with for 2days prior, then offer food....... Good Luck

Wait a while before you mess with your blood unitll he has a few eats under the belt. That should also help.

I feed my large female (over 5 feet and I'm guessing about 25 pounds) a jumbo rat every 3 or 4 weeks. If I don't have any jumbo rats, I'll give her 2 medium rats ever 2-3 weeks.

I recommend with a juvenile, feed at least every week or at least every other week.
