Edisto Island kingsnake...

pweaver Aug 23, 2006 08:30 AM

I picked up a trio of Edisto Island mosaic kingsnakes from Kevin Enge at Daytona. These were pretty much an impulse buy, as I've never really been into Eastern Kings before. They are pretty cool though. Two of the three have solid black bellys.

I saw those on his table. Kind of cool looking I agree. It was nice to see Easterns for sale at some of the tables. Good luck with them.

Paul, I bought 2.2 Edisto Island mosaic kings from him as well.

My purchase was not an impulse purchase though. I sought his table out like a Hellfire searching for a T-72.

Take it easy.

Awesome ! Great pick up Paul. Can you post picks of the others ? Also can you note which of the 3 doesnt have a black belly. Thanks...

p.s. Will Still and I popped out some Mosaics from the S. Georgia Eastern Kings we have. Ill post better pics once they shed.

I spoke with Enge at length about these snakes. He did breed the pure mosaic's with a Georgia animal - but the 3 snakes that Paul bought and the 4 that I bought are pure South Carolina; and not from that project.

These babies are the result of the Mosaic (edisto island) and a Cottage, South Carolina male Eastern King. Cottage, SC is 50 miles from Edisto Island, according to Enge. I cannot find any reference to Cottage, SC on the internet (but I have only tried Yahoo so far).

I intend to breed the Edisto mosaic's that I have with the Edisto Island F1 snakes I picked up from the person on Edisto Island last Thursday.

Yeah I know that those are SC Mosaics. Cottage Sc is in Colleton Co. not terribly far from Edisto but not on the coast either. I mentioned to you via the phone it looks like the same thing that is in SC is in the GA's. The GA's we have have no SC in them thats whats weird. Will Still purchased his GA's from Enge before Enge even had or knew about Mosaics in SC. Ultimatley its just speculation if they are the same mutation or trait but the evisual evidence is pretty compelling. Enege even alludes in his article that Wills "Frank the Tank" might be a Mosaic. Here you look and tell me Peter what you think ?

Enge's WC Edisto female Mosaic (The one that started the line)

-
Will Stills S. Georgia Eastern King from Enge's stock of Echols Co.,GA X Tift Co., GA

Enge's F1 baby from the Edisto female above and the Colleton Co. male (he is a Type2 Mosaic)

Will's just hatched Striped baby (they are damn near identical)

Kevins breeder Striped Mosaics

My point isnt that the lines have been crossed and thats what we are seien g but that the same thing hjas popped up in both lines. Its pretty cool but shouldnt be suprising after all we are talking about Eastern Kings not 2 different subs.

Keith,

Is Frank really that white in appearance now? I remember him having alot of red as a juvenile and you can still see a little bit in that pic. But overall, it looks as if maybe the pic is brighter making him look white.

Keith Hillson Aug 23, 2006 11:51 AM

According to Will he is straw yellow with orange and pink highlights. I like that pic on the wood floor best as it shows his pattern better. Here is I think a yearling pic or maybe a 2 year pic, probably this displays what his true color is better.

Man, get some of Kevin's Mosaics and produce whiter ones what feed like your GA Kings do!!!

Keith Hillson Aug 23, 2006 01:43 PM

Looking at Kevins adults and young adults Im not so sure they are all that white. Looks like his Original female is but the other older ones like the breeder stripes look yellowish to tan.

I agree though a white and black one would be freaking awesome.

One more thing. The Sc Mosaics are notorious problem feeders (refusing food for over a year in some cases) it might be worth crossing the 2 lines as the Georgia eat right out of the egg. I know Kevin has bred the Mosaics into the his GA's but Will GA's from Kevin are further along generation wise. I think Enge only bred his Echols Co., GA male into the Mosaics and who is too say it wasnt Momma carrying the Mosaic thing for the Georgia line ? Oh yeah here is the male I hatched that Im keeping...Post the pics of your new Mosaics Im dying to see them. Hopefully next year Ill get a pair from Enge if we can work something out.

i had my wallet out for a pair of gorgeous Mosaics at Kevins table but he pointed out they were not taking pinks and only have been pumped, i was bummed so declined and walked away ,i really dont have time for problem feeders. thanks for the honesty Kevin. L8r........Chris

pweaver Aug 23, 2006 11:56 AM

yeah, that almost scared me off, but I'm used to force-feeding Coastal milks to get them going. For the Edisto kings, I just gave them a couple of thawed mouse legs and they chomped them down.

Just wait till those babies grow up, WOW! Man, that's one awesome impulse buy. Someday I'll have a pair myself, as soon as I can build a barn big enough to hold everything on my wish list. LOL!
Congratulations!
