If the driftwood is small enough to go into your oven, baking at 200-250F for about an hour or two will kill harmful bacteria and critters that may be living in the cracks of the wood.
You can also soak the driftwood in a 1:10 bleach/water solution for 20 minutes, rinse repeatly in cold clean water till all the bleach smell is gone or greatly reduced, then let air dry for 24 hours or more in a well ventilated area (outside is best, or in a garage or balcony).
Once sterilzied, driftwood can be sealed with a clear varish or wood shalac to help prevent waste material from soaking into the wood. Of course, if you do elect to seal the wood, give several days to throughoutly dry the varish in a well ventilated area (or again, outside) Give more time if the varish pools in crevices, cracks or holes in the driftwood. You basicaly want no smell to be left when you put the driftwood into the cage.
