ball python ....constipated?

keeper_paige Aug 23, 2006 06:23 PM

i work at the baton rouge zoo and have recently aquired a rescued ball python. she was origionally a hurricane katrina victim, but has since bounced from several keepers in an attempt to find a good home. therefore naturally i know little about her habbits.

i fed her more than a week ago and she still hasnt deficated. im inclined to think this is a problem, the snakes i work with deficate within 2-3 days of consumption, but i dont have alot of experience with pythons. i have her temp and humidity in check, as well as hot and cooler places within her enclosure. i havnt fed her agian yet, and i have tried soaking her in warm water.
is it normal for ball pythons to not poop for more than a week after eating?
thank you
Paige

Yeah, actually it could possibly be a month or more. Look right in front of her vent. If she is "full", you'll see a very significant swelling immediately in front of her vent. If not, her belly should be relatively flat.

I have some that defecate more frequently, some less.

Just like any living creature, when it is deprived from food the body does all it can to keep reserves. So it would only make sense if she hasn't eaten in a while... if that's the case... that maybe her body is storing??... just a possibility
